Shaman Drums

A ritual drum provides a deep rhythmic foundation and is used in musical ceremonies, group playing and individual sound practice. The category name describes a way of use rather than one exact construction, so compare the shape, diameter, head material and holding method. A larger drum is generally louder and sounds deeper, but is also harder to hold for long periods. With a natural head, allow for sensitivity to temperature and humidity.

Holding by hand or playing on a stand

You can hold a smaller frame drum in one hand and play it with a mallet or palm in the other. A larger instrument needs a strap, stable grip or stand depending on its construction. Before buying, check the weight and whether a mallet is included.

More than size changes the sound

  • the material and tension of the head;
  • the frame depth and overall construction;
  • the hardness and shape of the mallet;
  • the striking point from the centre to the edge;
  • storage conditions and acclimatisation of the instrument.

Group playing and working with dynamics

When using several drums, first agree on the basic pulse and space for each rhythm. A deep instrument can easily cover quieter percussion, so do not begin at maximum force. Alternating between the centre and edge of the head creates different colours without changing the instrument. During group playing, respect pauses and keep the volume appropriate for the room.

Mallet, palm and a soft strike

A soft mallet emphasises the deep foundation, while a harder head adds a sharper attack. Not every drum is intended for hand playing, so follow its construction and the manufacturer's instructions. Before a longer session, check the surface of the head and any loose attachment of the handle or strap.

Care before and after playing

Do not expose the drum to sudden heat or prolonged moisture. After moving it between different temperatures, allow it to acclimatise to the environment. If you are looking for other resonant instruments for a calmer sound layer, see singing bowls or melodic glockenspiels.
