Recorder Ensemble Sheet Music for Group Lessons

Fun and Games with the Recorder Ensemble Collection is a Schott Music songbook of 36 ensemble pieces for 3-4 recorders, edited by Peter Bowman as a supplement to the Fun & Games with the Recorder tutor series. The collection is designed to encourage ensemble playing among young recorder players, with attractive arrangements that can be mixed and matched across soprano, alto and tenor voices.

Spanning roughly six centuries of music, the book moves from a 12th-century Song of the Ass through Renaissance dances by Praetorius and Susato, Baroque favourites by Purcell, Handel, Lully, Telemann and Rameau, Classical pieces by Mozart and Beethoven, and ends with two rags by Scott Joplin and two pieces by Peter Warlock. The aim of this collection is to encourage ensemble playing, and the flexible scorings (SAT, SST, SSA, SAB, SSS, SATBB, SSAT, SATB) let a teacher build different group sizes from the same material.

What's Inside the Book

Each piece is presented in a mostly one-part format, which means weaker players can join in alongside more advanced friends without being left behind. The level of difficulty is marked very easy to easy, and the material is partially already suited for the 2nd year of lessons, making it a natural next step after a beginner tutor book.

  • Pieces: 36 ensemble pieces for many different combinations of instruments
  • Instrumentation: 3-4 recorders (SAT, SST, SSA, SAB, SSS, SATBB, SSAT, SATB) — flexible scoring for any group size
  • Level of Difficulty: very easy to easy — accessible from the second year of lessons onward
  • Editor: Peter Bowman — also translator of the Fun & Games with the Alto Recorder series
  • Illustrations: John Minnion

Who This Collection Is For

The Fun and Games with the Recorder Ensemble Collection is the right choice for recorder teachers running group lessons, school music programs, and amateur consorts who want a single book of varied, easy-to-play ensemble material. It suits mixed-ability groups because most parts stay in a comfortable range and many pieces are one-part, so beginners from their second year of lessons can play alongside more experienced players. The mix of medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and early 20th-century styles keeps rehearsals musically interesting, and the flexible SAT/SST/SSA/SAB scorings let a leader adapt the line-up to whoever turns up on the day.
