After performing with Etta Jones and playing in George Bohannon’s quintet during the 1960s, he formed the influential Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet, releasing two albums on Blue Note Records. Cox played alongside artists such as Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Jackie McLean, Roy Haynes, and Wes Montgomery, and contributed to many recordings throughout his career. In the 1980s, he led the Guerilla Jam Band, collaborating with musicians like Regina Carter and James Carter, and helped establish Strata Records, a notable but short-lived Detroit label. He died in 2008 at home in Detroit.
