Wyclef Jean is a Haitian rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer who rose to international fame as a founding member of the Fugees, one of the most influential hip hop groups of the 1990s. After immigrating to the United States from Haiti as a child, he formed the Fugees in New Jersey with Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel, producing and performing on their critically acclaimed and best-selling album The Score. Following the group’s success, Wyclef launched a solo career highlighted by the hit album The Carnival, which featured the chart-topping single Gone till November. He continued to achieve mainstream success with collaborations on songs like Destiny Child’s No No No, Whitney Houston’s My Love Is Your Love, and Santana’s Maria Maria, as well as his own singles like 911 with Mary J Blige and Sweetest Girl featuring Akon, Lil Wayne, and Niia. Wyclef also contributed to Shakira’s global smash Hips Don’t Lie. Beyond his solo work, Wyclef is known for producing and writing songs for many artists across genres, and for collaborating with figures like Bono and Mick Jagger. He co-wrote the official 2014 FIFA World Cup anthem Dar um Jeito with Carlos Santana and Avicii, and has contributed music to film and television, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Million Voices from Hotel Rwanda. Wyclef has been active in Haitian politics and philanthropy, serving as Ambassador-at-Large and leading relief efforts through his charity Yéle Haiti. His achievements have earned him three Grammy Awards, the BET Humanitarian Award, and the NAACP Vanguard Award. He has also received national honors from Haiti, and is recognized for charting hits across 16 different Billboard radio charts.
