Tripods for foto and video

A tripod stabilises a camera, camcorder or phone for long exposures, video, self-portraits and work with a telephoto lens. Maximum height alone is not enough when choosing; the load capacity must cover the complete setup, including the lens, head and accessories. A light travel model is easy to carry, while a sturdier construction resists wind and vibration better. Check the type of quick-release plate and the device thread.

Photo and video heads

A ball head lets you change composition quickly when taking photographs. A three-way head provides precise control over each direction. For smooth panning in video, use a head designed for controlled movement that can support the particular camera.

Load capacity, height and transport

• calculate load capacity with a reserve for the heaviest lens or microphone;
• the working height should reduce the need to bend continuously;
• a centre column speeds up adjustment but may reduce stability when extended;
• folded dimensions matter for backpacks and travel;
• use a hook or weight only according to the manufacturer's instructions and conditions.

A tripod is the simplest solution for a locked-off shot and long exposure. For walking and subject tracking, use a stabiliser or gimbal. Choose the support according to the digital camera, camcorder or phone it will carry.
