He rose to prominence as Wayne Shorter's successor in Miles Davis's band and collaborated with Chick Corea on the album The Sun in 1970. Grossman also played with Elvin Jones from 1971 to 1973. In the late 1970s, he co-founded the Stone Alliance trio with Don Alias and Gene Perla, recording several acclaimed albums, including collaborations with international artists. The group later reunited for a series of live albums in the 2000s.
