Skyhooks

Skyhooks

Skyhooks were a groundbreaking Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1973. Their classic lineup featured Graeme Shirley Strachan on vocals, Greg Macainsh on bass, Red Symons on guitar and keyboards, Bob Bongo Starkie on guitar, and Imants Freddie Strauks on drums. Renowned for their flamboyant costumes and witty lyrics, Skyhooks addressed topics like drugs, sex, and the gay scene, often with uniquely Australian references. Their debut album Living in the 70s became a cultural phenomenon, topping charts for 16 weeks and becoming Australia’s best-selling album at the time, while their follow-up Ego Is Not a Dirty Word also dominated the charts. After several lineup changes, the band split in 1980 but reunited for successful comebacks in the 1990s, including the chart-topping single Jukebox in Siberia. Skyhooks left a lasting impact on Australian music and pop culture, earning induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1992.
