Sidney Bechet was an influential American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer. Among the earliest prominent soloists in jazz, he made his first recordings before Louis Armstrong. Though his career was affected by a tempestuous personality, he rose to international fame in the late 1940s and spent much of his later years living and performing in France.
