Prefab Sprout are an English pop and rock band from Witton Gilbert, County Durham, best known for their sophisticated songwriting and melodic sound. Formed in 1978 by brothers Paddy and Martin McAloon, the group gained wider attention in the 1980s when Wendy Smith joined in 1982. Their debut album Swoon was released in 1984 to critical acclaim, followed by highly regarded records like Steve McQueen and Jordan The Comeback. Paddy McAloon is celebrated for his songwriting, with the band’s music often highlighted as some of the most beloved pop of the 1980s and 1990s. Prefab Sprout achieved several top 40 albums in the UK, and their best-known single The King of Rock n Roll reached number seven on the UK charts. Other notable songs include When Love Breaks Down and Cars and Girls. Since 2003, Paddy McAloon has continued to release music under the Prefab Sprout name as a solo project.
