Instant cameras

An instant camera produces a physical photograph shortly after you press the shutter, making it suitable for celebrations, travel and creative projects. Individual systems use different cartridges and film sizes that are not interchangeable. Before buying, check the availability of the correct film, the number of shots in a pack and the size of the final photograph. Close-up modes, self-timer, flash or exposure compensation may be useful where offered by the particular model.

The photograph format defines the whole system

Smaller prints fit easily into a wallet or journal, while a larger format provides more room for a group shot. The camera price is only part of the cost; if you take photos frequently, also consider the price of film cartridges. Store film according to the manufacturer's instructions and do not open the camera while a cartridge is in use.

Simple photography or creative settings

  • Automatic models suit quick snapshots without adjustment.
  • Flash control helps with portraits and indoor photography.
  • A mirror or close-up mode makes self-portraits and details easier.
  • A timer is useful for group photographs.
  • A protective case shields the lens and body during transport.

When you also want to save photographs digitally

An instant system focuses on physical output. If you need greater control over files and repeated shots without using film, compare digital cameras or portable compact cameras.
