Electronic Drum Sound Modules

A sound module is the control centre of electronic drums: it receives the signal from pads, turns it into sound and determines how naturally the kit reacts to your dynamics. It is worth considering when building your own setup, upgrading an older kit or when you need better sounds, MIDI/USB connection or training functions. The most important points are pad compatibility and the number of inputs.

Compatibility and inputs

Before buying, check whether the module supports the type of snare, tom, cymbal and kick pads you use. Multi-zone inputs, cymbal choke, hi-hat controller support and the option to add further pads are also important. If you do not yet have a setup, a complete electronic drum kits is usually simpler because the module has been matched to the pads by the manufacturer.

Sounds, practice and recording

A better module provides more kits, more detailed response, a metronome, practice recording and often USB or MIDI for connection to a computer. That helps in a home studio, with virtual instruments and when playing to backing tracks. If you want to trigger samples or loops directly by hand or sticks, also check sampling pads and multipads, which solve creative sound control in another way.
