Cellos

When you play the cello, its endpin rests on the floor, but the correct size is still determined by your build, arm length and comfortable finger reach. An instrument that is too large forces you into a tense posture and makes clean intonation more difficult. When choosing your first instrument, consider the size, condition of the bridge, string height and what the set includes.

Adjust the size together with the chair and endpin

Most adults use a full-size 4/4, while younger players choose 3/4, 1/2 or smaller sizes. With the endpin extended, the upper part of the instrument should sit against your chest so that your left hand can reach without raising your shoulder. Confirm your decision with your teacher rather than relying solely on an age chart.

The bridge, strings and bow determine playability

The bridge must stand straight and follow the curvature of the fingerboard. String action that is too high tires your fingers, while low action can cause buzzing. When replacing cello strings, do not change them all at once without a reason, so that the bridge and soundpost do not lose pressure.

Acoustic or electric body

An acoustic cello is the natural choice for school, chamber music and orchestra. An electric cello makes amplification and, depending on its features, quieter practice easier, but you need headphones, amplification or other equipment. Check the ergonomics of the support just as carefully as you would with a wooden body.

Transport requires the correct case size

A soft case protects against dust and minor scuffs, while a hard case is better suited to frequent travel. Check the space for the bow, rosin and endpin stopper. Do not lift the instrument by its neck or bridge.

Try the playing position with the endpin extended, check the string action and choose a set that includes the correct bow size and protection for transport.
