Cello Strings

Cello strings differ in core, tension and response across individual registers. A steel core stabilises quickly and offers a direct attack, while synthetic or other constructions may provide a more flexible feel. Choose a set according to the scale length, bridge and character of your specific instrument.

The A and D may not respond in the same way as the G and C

Players sometimes combine upper and lower strings from different sets to balance attack and depth. Such a combination changes the tension on the bridge, so do not create it at random. First identify the problem with one string and only then change the setup.

Change one string at a time

Do not leave the bridge of your cello without the pressure of all the strings. While tuning, watch whether it tilts towards the fingerboard. Do not lubricate or widen the groove without a luthier’s recommendation.

A pickup may emphasise different frequencies

If you amplify the instrument, also test the combination through the pickup you use. A string that sounds balanced acoustically may sound harsher through a piezo. Do not use EQ to address a mechanical problem with the bridge.

Choose strings according to the response of your specific cello, and check the bridge and action when changing the core or tension.
