Bone Conduction Headphones

Bone conduction headphones send sound through the cheekbones, so the ear canal stays open and you can better notice traffic, conversation or what is happening around you. They make the most sense for running, cycling, hiking and work situations where you do not want to be fully cut off from your surroundings. They do not sound like closed hi-fi headphones: bass is usually lighter and outside noise is not isolated, but open listening is exactly their main advantage. When choosing, look at comfort behind the ears, stability during movement, battery life, sweat resistance and whether you need a microphone for calls.

When bone conduction headphones are a good choice

Choose them when music or a podcast should be a companion, not complete sound isolation. During sport they help you stay aware of your surroundings, and for longer wear they do not put earbuds or ear pads in or on your ears. If you mainly listen on a noisy train, in a studio or expect strong bass, wireless Bluetooth headphones with a classic design may be a better alternative.

How to choose a model

  • For running and cycling: prioritise low weight, a secure band and resistance to sweat or rain.
  • For work and calls: a stable Bluetooth connection, clear microphone and all-day battery life are important.
  • For hearing safety: bone conduction headphones do not seal the ear, but in a loud environment do not raise the volume unnecessarily high; when working in excessive noise, separate hearing protection is more suitable.

If open listening suits you and you need to hear what is happening around you, this category is more practical than classic in-ear models. If noise cancellation, full bass or private listening in the office is decisive, compare it instead with closed-back or ANC headphones.
