Bag Yarn

Bag yarn is what you use to crochet your own handbag, shoulder bag or shopping bag. Here you will find braided cotton cords from Bobbiny, Yarn Art Macrame cords and yarns, a polyester cord and Ribbon tape yarn. A braided cord keeps its shape better than ordinary knitting yarn, which is why it is used for sturdy bags and baskets. The two things to decide on are thickness and material.

What thickness of bag yarn suits a crochet handbag?

Thickness is the deciding factor. Bobbiny Junior is 3 mm and works with a 6–8 mm hook, so it suits smaller handbags and clutches. Bobbiny Classic measures 4 mm, while Bobbiny Premium is 5 mm and needs an 8–10 mm hook – with Premium you can crochet a firm shoulder bag as well as a shopping bag. Bobbiny cords are made in Poland from recycled cotton.

For a finer handbag with a bold pattern, try Yarn Art Macrame Cotton: it is 2 mm thick, has 225 m per 250 g and uses a 5 mm hook. The Spectrum and VR versions come with colour gradients, and Lurex adds a shiny thread. The braided Yarn Art Macrame Braided is 4 mm, and Macrame Cord comes in 3 or 5 mm.

Should you crochet a bag in cotton or polyester cord?

Cotton cord is matte and soft to the touch, and it works well for everyday handbags you carry around town. The polyester Yarn Art Macrame cord (130 m, 4 mm hook) and the thicker Macrame XL (7 mm hook) are firm with a subtle sheen. Polyester soaks up less water than cotton and dries faster, which makes it a good fit for beach bags and shopping bags. The polypropylene cord inci PP Macrame is similarly firm.

When is Ribbon tape yarn the right choice?

Yarn Art Ribbon is a flat tape made of cotton or viscose (125 m per 250 g, 10 mm hook) that gives a bag a smooth surface. Cord Yarn is a chunky cotton cord yarn for a 12 mm hook, so a bag made from it grows quickly. You will find a hook in the right size among our crochet hooks, and twisted macramé cords for wall hangings and decorations in the twine section.
