Antelope Audio Impresser (Digital product)
Impresser: The Ultimate Compression Tool
Introduction
Impresser is inspired by one of the most versatile and powerful compressors in the audio industry. Its unique analog design and exceptional feature set deliver a signature sound that combines the best of vintage compression with an expanded range of control options. Developed by Antelope Audio, Impresser is perfect for both Native and Synergy Core Real-Time workflows, making it an essential tool for any audio engineer.
Description
Impresser excels at adding gentle warmth to your tracks or delivering aggressive pumping effects to your audio sources. Its versatility is enhanced by a harmonic distortion section, allowing for subtle tube-quality distortion or even serving as a tape saturator. At a 1:1 ratio, Impresser acts as a pure harmonic enhancer, introducing low-order warmth and analog character without any gain reduction.
The 10:1 Opto ratio provides smooth, musical optical compression, while the iconic Nuke ratio can transform a small garage sound into a massive, pumping grunge experience. The UK Mode pushes the Attack and Release settings to their limits, capturing the explosive non-linearities of classic limiter circuitry.
Additionally, Impresser features High- and Band-pass side-chain filters with adjustable frequency settings, allowing for precise control over the frequency range you want to shape. Like all Antelope Audio compressor models, Impresser can be utilized in both mono and stereo configurations.
History
The original hardware unit that inspired Impresser was created in the early 90s, a time when classic optical levelers and fast studio limiters were essential in every studio. Many of these units were no longer in production, making them difficult to find. Impresser emerged as a readily available solution, offering smooth optical-style compression while also transforming into a fast, aggressive FET-like compressor with just a few adjustments.
During this era, grunge music was at its height, and studios sought tools that could infuse analog distortion, color, and grit into their sound. The unit that inspired Impresser was capable of adding 2nd and 3rd order harmonics, making it one of the most flexible compressors of its time and a complete palette for emulating tube and tape saturation.
