Knitting Yarn

Knitting yarn determines the warmth, elasticity, weight, and care of the finished item. Two balls of the same thickness may behave differently depending on their fiber content and twist. The recommended needle size is a starting point, not a substitute for a gauge swatch. For a larger project, also consider the yardage and dye lot.

Choose the fiber content according to the item

  • Wool fibers provide warmth and natural elasticity.
  • Cotton creates firmer stitches and a less elastic fabric.
  • A blend can balance care, shape, and feel against the skin.
  • A novelty texture can obscure a complex pattern while creating its own texture.

A swatch reveals the actual gauge

Knit a sufficiently large square, measure it, treat it according to the recommended care instructions, and measure it again. Only then calculate the stitches. This step is important for garments, where a few stitches affect both width and length. When combining colors, buy balls from the same dye lot if you need a consistent shade.

Solid, variegated, or branded ranges

Solid yarn highlights textured patterns, while variegated yarn creates a color effect without frequent yarn changes. For a specific branded selection, see Alize Yarn. The broader Knitting / Crochet category provides more context; for crochet projects, also compare Crochet Hooks.

Keep the label until the project is finished

It contains the fiber content, yardage, color, dye lot, and care instructions. Store leftover balls in a dry, dark place. Protect work in progress from snagging and, when washing, follow the requirements of the most delicate fiber used.
