Inks

Ink creates rich lines, washed areas, or calligraphic strokes depending on its composition and the tool used. Some inks remain water-soluble, while others become more resistant after drying. This property determines whether a wet color layer can follow. Always check compatibility with the pen or brush.

Drawing ink and washes

For a clean line, you need paper that does not make the ink feather. For washes, prepare several dilution levels in advance and begin with the lightest. Build dark areas after drying so you can control the edge. Test water resistance only after the mark has fully set.

Dip pen, brush, or technical pen

  • A dip nib changes the character of the line according to its shape and pressure.
  • A brush creates smooth changes in width and a soft edge.
  • Fountain and technical pens require only ink intended for their system.

For calligraphy options, see Calligraphy Pens; a broader range of tools is grouped under Calligraphy.

Keep the bottle closed while working

Keep the rim of the bottle clean so the cap seals properly. Rinse the nib or brush before the ink dries. Do not mix different formulations without testing, as they may form a precipitate or alter the flow.
