ASM Hydrasynth Explorer Synthesizer

The ASM Hydrasynth Explorer is a portable 8-voice polyphonic wave-morphing synthesizer that packs the full sound engine of the flagship Hydrasynth into a compact, battery-powered 37-key format. Polytouch® polyphonic aftertouch lets each key respond to pressure independently, opening expressive control over modulation, filters, and effects. Three oscillators per voice, four Mutator waveshapers, five LFOs, and five DAHDSR envelopes feed a 32-slot modulation matrix with eight macro knobs for real-time sound morphing.

  • 37 slim keys with patented Polytouch® polyphonic aftertouch for per-note expression
  • 8-voice polyphony with three oscillators and 219 selectable waveforms per voice
  • Four Mutator waveshapers covering FM-Lin, WaveStack, PW-ASM, Harmonic Sweep, and Hard Sync
  • CV/Gate outputs, MIDI In/Out/Thru, and USB MIDI for hybrid studio and modular rigs
  • Runs on 8x AA batteries for true grab-and-go sound design anywhere

ASM Hydrasynth Explorer — Portable 8-Voice Polyphonic Wave-Morphing Synthesizer

The ASM Hydrasynth Explorer delivers flagship-grade sound design in a compact, battery-powered 37-key format. Polytouch® polyphonic aftertouch makes every key pressure-sensitive independently, so each note can bend or modulate on its own. An 8-voice engine with three oscillators per voice and four Mutator waveshapers gives a tonal range that rivals larger workstations. CV/Gate outputs and USB MIDI drop it into hybrid rigs with Eurorack modules or any DAW.

What makes the Explorer unique

Patented Polytouch® keybed technology is the headline feature — true polyphonic aftertouch on a compact 37-key layout is rare, and ASM's semi-weighted slim keys keep the playing feel responsive without bulk. The Mutator section adds seven waveshaping modes including FM-Linear, WavStack™, PW-ASM, Harmonic Sweep, and Hard Sync.

Sound engine and oscillators — deep wavetable morphing per voice

Three oscillators per voice with 219 single-cycle waveforms and a WaveScan mode that morphs through user-defined wavetables form the tone-generating core. Oscillators 1 and 2 carry the full wavemorphing engine, while Oscillator 3 acts as a fixed-wave source.

  • Polyphony: 8 voices — headroom for layered pads, splits, and MPE performances
  • Oscillators: 3 per voice, 219 waveforms with WaveScan wavemorphing on Osc 1 & 2
  • Mutators: 4 per voice — FM-Lin, WavStack, PW-Orig, PW-Squeeze, PW-ASM, Harmonic Sweep, Hard Sync

Modulation matrix and performance controls — expressive depth

A 32-slot modulation matrix with 35 sources and 191 destinations gives near-limitless routing. Five LFOs and five DAHDSR envelopes per voice supply the modulation material, and eight macro knobs each target up to eight destinations for one-knob sound transformations.

  • LFOs: 5 per voice with 10 waveforms, 64-step mode, and BPM sync
  • Envelopes: 5 DAHDSR per voice with looping, BPM sync, and 8-level quantize
  • Arpeggiator: Yes — 8 modes including phrase, ratchet, chance, and 1–6 octave range

Filters, effects, and I/O — studio and stage ready

Two routable filters per voice shape the tone — Filter 1 offers 16 models including a vocal formant filter, while Filter 2 is a continuously variable 12 dB/octave SEM-style design. Pre-effects, post-effects, delay, and reverb cover chorus, rotary, compression, distortion, and BPM-synced delays.

  • Pitch Bend: Yes via touchstrip with adjustable depth
  • CV/Gate: 5x 3.5 mm outputs — CV, Gate, Mod 1, Mod 2, Clock — supports 1 V/oct, 1.2 V/oct, Hz/V, Buchla
  • Power: 12 V DC PSU or 8x AA batteries for portable sessions

Who should choose this synthesizer

The Explorer suits sound designers, electronic producers, and performing keyboardists who want flagship-grade wavetable synthesis in a portable format. Software-synth users will appreciate the 32-slot modulation matrix and eight macro knobs, which translate complex patch routings into hands-on control. Live performers benefit from polyphonic aftertouch, MPE support, and CV/Gate outputs that interface with Eurorack systems.

Ashun Sound Machines — boutique digital synthesis

Ashun Sound Machines (ASM) designed the Hydrasynth line around the pursuit of better ways for musicians to express themselves, with patented Polytouch® polyphonic aftertouch as the centerpiece. The Explorer continues that philosophy by shrinking the flagship's 8-voice engine, Polytouch® keybed, and Mutator waveshapers into a 37-key chassis that runs on AA batteries.

Number of Keys

Number of Keys: 37

This instrument has 37 keys, equivalent to 3 octaves, providing a wide range of tones for a variety of musical applications.

Aftertouch

Aftertouch: Yes

Aftertouch technology on the keys allows musicians to add a new level of expression to their playing. When a key reaches the bottom of its stroke, the pressure exerted on the key can continue to be sensed and used to control various aspects of the sound, such as vibrato, volume, or tone modulation.

Polyphony

Polyphony: 8

The polyphony of this instrument allows up to <%=tp_value % notes to be played simultaneously, providing rich and complex musical possibilities.

LFO

LFO: Yes

An LFO, or low frequency oscillator, brings electronic sound to life. It adds movement and interest to synthetic sounds and effects, playing an important role in both subtle synthesis and bold sound design. However, you won't hear the LFO itself because it acts as a modulator. This means that it does not directly affect the audio signal, but adjusts other parameters such as oscillator pitch and filter clipping.

Envelope: Yes

The Envelope filter gives you precise control over the dynamics and shape of the sound. This filter provides greater flexibility in adjusting and customizing sound characteristics, enhancing the overall quality and expressiveness of the performance.

Oscillators: Yes

A powerful oscillator system allows users to create rich and variable sound textures. Oscillators can generate a variety of waveforms, including sine, square, triangle, and noise, allowing for creativity and experimentation.

Pitch Bend: Yes

The Pitch Bend allows smooth pitch changes, adding expressiveness to musical expression. Often used to create effects such as glissando or vibrato, this feature allows the player to make subtle or dramatic changes to the sound in real time. Pitch bend allows musicians to create smooth transitions between notes, increasing the dynamics and expressiveness of their performances.

Arpeggiator: Yes

The Arpeggiator transforms chords into sequences of individual notes played in various rhythmic and melodic patterns. Instead of playing the chords as a harmonic whole, the Arpeggiator breaks the chords into individual notes and plays them sequentially according to the selected algorithm.

Outputs

  • MIDI OUT
  • CV Jack 3,5mm TS
  • Jack 6,3 mm TRS L/Mono + R
  • Headphone Jack 6,3mm TRS

Pedal Inputs: Yes

The pedal input allows you to connect an external pedal that expands the instrument's control capabilities and contributes to a richer musical expression, increasing flexibility and expressiveness when playing and creating music.

MIDI Interface: Yes

It supports MIDI, allowing you to connect and communicate with other MIDI-compatible devices. This feature extends control and integration into the larger music environment, increasing flexibility and creativity in music creation.

Battery Operation: Yes

Battery power provides flexibility and mobility. This feature allows you to use the device anywhere, even in places where an electrical outlet is not available. Battery power is ideal for situations that require portability and independence from the grid, whether you're outdoors, on the road, or in a location with limited access to electricity.
